Delta Flight Returns to Airport After Odor Detected in Cabin

A Delta Air Lines aircraft was forced to return shortly after takeoff due to a strong odor detected in the cabin. Flight DL 2311, operating from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, safely returned to Los Angeles after the crew noticed what was described as an “unpleasant smell” midair.

According to reports, the aircraft was carrying 189 passengers, two pilots, and four flight attendants. Following an inspection, the odor was determined not to have originated from the aircraft’s systems or in-flight service, but rather from spoiled food brought onboard by a passenger.

The crew made the decision to return in accordance with flight safety procedures, and the aircraft landed safely back at its departure airport. Passengers were disembarked, and those continuing to Salt Lake City were rebooked on another flight.

In a statement, Delta Air Lines said:

“The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority. After detecting an odor in the cabin, our crew followed standard procedures and safely returned the aircraft. We apologize to our passengers for the delay.”
