CIA Conducted Weather Modification Research

Declassified documents related to the U.S.-based Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have resurfaced, indicating that the United States carried out research on weather modification in the past. Documents dating back to the 1960s show that projects at the time focused on influencing rainfall and storm systems by releasing substances into the atmosphere.

The documents are not newly released; most were declassified in the early 2000s and have been publicly accessible for years. As such, the existence of these studies has long been known, and the materials can be accessed through open sources.

One of the most cited examples is “Operation Popeye,” conducted during the Vietnam War. However, experts note that these efforts were limited in scope and there is no scientific evidence supporting the capability to control weather on a global scale.

➡️ Meanwhile, claims circulating on social media suggest that aircraft contrails are the result of “chemical spraying” and that they pose a risk to public health. Some posts link these claims to the CIA documents. However, experts state that these trails are condensation trails formed naturally at high altitudes, and current scientific evidence does not support claims of a systematic threat to human health.
