Cautious Outlook in Aviation and Travel Industry Despite Iran Ceasefire

The two-week ceasefire announcement by US President Donald Trump has sparked cautious optimism in the global aviation sector, yet industry executives warn that immediate relief is not expected. Despite the surge in airline stocks, damage to refinery capacities in the Middle East is projected to keep fuel supplies tight and costly for months.

Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), stated that even if the Strait of Hormuz is reopened, it will take months for supply to normalize due to the regional infrastructure damage.

Rising Fuel Costs and Operational Challenges

Delta Air Lines announced it expects an additional burden of approximately $2 billion in fuel costs for the second quarter and will implement capacity cuts to offset this expense. The company expects to pay roughly $4.30 per gallon for jet fuel, which is more than double last year’s price.

Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz halted global flow and forced airlines to take the following measures:

  • Increasing ticket prices
  • Reducing flight frequencies
  • Adding extra fuel stops

Despite the ceasefire declaration, military activity in the region reportedly continues. The Kuwaiti military announced that attacks have persisted since Wednesday morning, noting that drone strikes have caused extensive physical damage to oil infrastructure, power plants, and water desalination facilities. The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain also confirmed they faced similar attacks.

Recovery in Tourism May Take Time

Although airline and travel stocks gained value on the stock market, it is estimated that the tourism sector’s return to its former glory will take time. TUI announced that it will take at least four weeks for two cruise ships, currently stranded in Abu Dhabi and Doha due to the conflict, to return to service.

Economists noted that even in the best-case scenario, the Middle East’s $367 billion tourism industry requires months to recover.
