Athens FIR Line Radio Crisis

Athens FIR Line Radio Crisis: Flights Grind to a Halt
A major disruption has been unfolding in Greek airspace since the morning hours due to a technical failure in radio communication systems. As a result of an issue affecting the radio frequency systems at the Athens Control Center, flight traffic along the Athens FIR line has been restricted, bringing flight operations at airports across the country—particularly Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport—close to a standstill.
According to a statement by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA / YPA), a technical fault in the central frequency systems disrupted reliable communication between pilots and air traffic controllers. In order not to compromise flight safety, capacity restrictions were imposed on the Athens FIR line, with many aircraft being held on the apron. It was reported that aircraft already airborne are being monitored via emergency frequencies (VHF and HF).
Congestion and Uncertainty at Airports
Due to the systemic issue, long delays and cancellations are affecting both domestic and international flights. Uncertainty continues for passengers waiting in terminals, while technical teams are still working to identify the source of the malfunction.
➡️ Through a published NOTAM, YPA officially announced a reduction in airspace capacity. The statement noted that, in order to maintain the highest level of flight safety, only a limited number of transit flights are being permitted, while traffic at local airports is being kept under control. No official timeline has yet been shared regarding when the issue will be resolved.
