Aircraft Water Systems Under Scrutiny

Aircraft Water Systems Under Scrutiny | E. coli Findings Detected at Some Airlines

Passengers are being urged to exercise greater caution regarding beverages served during flights and the use of tap water on board aircraft. The Center for Food as Medicine and Longevity, based in New York, published a comprehensive analysis examining airline onboard water systems over a three-year period between 2022 and 2025.

More than 35,000 water samples were evaluated as part of the study. Covering both major and regional airlines, the analysis considered contamination violations, E. coli findings, maintenance procedures, and how frequently water systems are cleaned. Airlines scoring 3.5 or higher were considered relatively safe, while lower scores were associated with potential health risks. During the review period, a total of 32 E. coli violations were identified across 21 airlines. Delta Air Lines received the highest score for water safety, with Alaska Airlines also ranking among the top performers. Spirit Airlines, JetBlue, and American Airlines placed at the bottom of the rankings.

Charles Platkin, who led the research, noted that airlines often state they comply with federal regulations, but emphasized that much of the data is based on airline self-reporting. He stressed that regulatory compliance should be viewed as a minimum requirement and that passengers should not have to worry about the safety of onboard water.

Registered dietitian Nicolette M. Pace recommended that passengers refill reusable bottles after passing through security or opt for bottled water. Citing concerns about the safety of tap water used in aircraft lavatories, Pace suggested that using hand sanitizer instead of tap water for hand hygiene may be a more appropriate precaution. She warned that consuming contaminated water can negatively affect digestion and weaken immune defenses, emphasizing that extra precautions are especially important for children, older adults, and passengers with weakened immune systems. Airlines stated that compliance with EPA regulations, along with regular testing and maintenance procedures, remains a priority to ensure passenger safety.
