AirAsia Prepares for a Major A220 Order

AirAsia, one of Southeast Asia’s largest low-cost airline groups, is preparing for a significant order for the Airbus A220. According to key industry sources, the company is considering an order of around 100 A220 aircraft, with options for up to 50 more.

This potential deal signals a notable shift in AirAsia’s fleet strategy. Currently operating a fleet dominated by the Airbus A320 and A321neo, the group may be entering the lower-capacity aircraft segment for the first time with this move.

The A220 is expected to play a complementary role in the fleet, particularly on regional routes, offering advantages in capacity and cost efficiency. In the talks, a high-density A220-300 configuration with approximately 160 seats is said to be the leading option.

Negotiations are reportedly non-exclusive, and AirAsia is also evaluating the Embraer E2 family as an alternative. If finalized, this order would be seen as a significant development for the Airbus A220 program in the Asian market.
