Air India Raises Security Concerns Over IndiGo-THY Wet Lease Deal

Air India has urged the Indian government to halt IndiGo’s aircraft wet lease agreement with Turkish Airlines, claiming the partnership threatens national security and harms domestic carriers.
According to Reuters, Air India’s appeal follows growing public backlash in India over Turkey’s political support for Pakistan, which has led to Indian tourists canceling travel plans to Turkey.
Since 2023, IndiGo has operated two Turkish Airlines aircraft (TC-LKE & TC-LKD) on flights between Delhi/Mumbai and Istanbul. These aircraft are operated under a wet lease agreement, complete with Turkish pilots and cabin crew. The agreement, renewed in six-month increments, is currently valid until May 31, 2025.
Air India argues that the partnership economically and strategically benefits Turkey, while weakening Indian airlines’ ability to compete on long-haul international routes. The carrier also cites Turkey’s pro-Pakistan stance as a matter of national security.
In response, IndiGo defends the partnership, emphasizing that it expands international access for Indian passengers, generates employment, and supports the airline’s reach into markets like Europe and the U.S. The codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines has been in place since 2018.
Air India maintains that the collaboration grants Turkish Airlines additional revenue and strategic leverage, putting Indian carriers at a competitive disadvantage.
