New footage has emerged showing the takeoff incident involving Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner VN-A867, operating flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi, during which the aircraft failed to become airborne before reaching the end of the runway and suffered a tail strike.
The aircraft began its takeoff roll on Runway 26L, which is approximately four kilometres long. Rotation occurred very close to the end of the runway, during which the tail section contacted the runway surface. According to unconfirmed reports, the aircraft became airborne approximately 120 metres beyond the runway end. The unusually late takeoff may have been related to a technical issue involving the landing gear.
Around 15 minutes after takeoff, all main landing gear brake temperature indications reportedly reached the critical level of 9.9. After holding in the air for a period, the aircraft returned to Munich and landed safely.
The exact cause of the incident will be determined following a technical investigation.
