Two American Airlines Aircraft with the Same Callsign Nearly Came Together Mid-Air

In the United States, two American Airlines aircraft operating under the same flight callsign, AAL2482, caused brief confusion for air traffic control. While both aircraft were on the same frequency, one was descending for arrival in the Eagle area, while the other was climbing after departure. The air traffic controller said that in his 25 years on the job, he had never seen two aircraft with the same callsign come so close to merging.

The controller separated the aircraft by assigning them different altitudes. One of the aircraft reported seeing the other, while the controller said a Mandatory Occurrence Report (MOR) would be filed regarding the incident.
