The Syrian Civil Aviation Authority has announced that an agreement has been reached to transfer the management of Latakia International Airport from Russia to the Syrian side.
Omar Al-Husri, President of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, visited Latakia Airport together with a delegation and Deputy Transport Minister Hassan Al-Sheibani. The visit followed a memorandum signed between Syria and Russia that paved the way for the transfer of the airport’s management to Syrian authorities.
Latakia Airport is located in the same area as Hmeimim Air Base, which has been used by Russia since 2015. Under the agreement, Syria is expected to gradually take control of the civilian section of the airport.
The section used by Russian military forces is reportedly being considered for conversion into a joint training area. The transfer of the airport back to Syrian administration is expected to support preparations for the resumption of civilian flights and mark an important step in restoring the country’s aviation infrastructure.
