Drone Carrying Explosives Found at Leipzig/Halle Airport

An investigation has been launched after a drone carrying explosives was found near a runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany.

Flights were temporarily suspended after the drone was discovered in a restricted area used for cargo operations, while several aircraft were diverted to other airports. Bomb disposal teams examined the drone and reportedly removed its detonator.

During the incident, a DHL cargo aircraft that had been diverted from the airport reportedly struck an unidentified object while climbing and later landed in Hanover. Inspections found minor damage to the aircraft, while no injuries were reported.

German authorities have opened a counter-terrorism investigation into the incident. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has also reportedly called an emergency meeting with the heads of the country’s security agencies.
