Syrian Air has launched scheduled domestic flights between Damascus and Deir ez-Zor. The inaugural service departed from Damascus International Airport and arrived at Deir ez-Zor Airport today.
The flight marked the reopening of Deir ez-Zor Airport to scheduled passenger services after a suspension of around 14 years. The airport had been closed to civil air traffic in 2012 because of the conflict in Syria.
Two weekly round-trip services will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with flights planned to be operated by Airbus A320 aircraft.
The return of scheduled services to Deir ez-Zor will not be limited to domestic routes. Syrian Air is also expected to operate two weekly flights between Deir ez-Zor and Kuwait.
Kuwait-based Jazeera Airways has announced that it will launch nonstop flights between Kuwait and Deir ez-Zor from August 8. Deir ez-Zor will become the airline’s third destination in Syria after Damascus and Aleppo.
