U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that new digital initiatives are being developed to modernize the passport application process.
Under the plan, U.S. citizens would be able to take passport photos at home using a phone, computer, or laptop camera and upload them directly to the application system.
Rubio said the submitted photos would be verified in real time using facial-recognition technology. The initiative is intended to reduce the need for applicants to visit physical photo studios or photo service locations for passport photographs.
