New Marine One Landing Pad to Be Built at the White House

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to build a new helicopter landing pad at the White House.

The granite landing pad will be constructed on the White House South Lawn and is intended for use during Marine One operations. Trump said the new-generation helicopters are more powerful than previous models and can damage the grass surface during takeoff and landing.

The project is expected to cost between US$5 million and US$6 million, with Sikorsky set to cover the expense. Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, is known as the manufacturer of U.S. presidential helicopters.

The new landing pad is also expected to feature the White House seal and an eagle emblem. Marine One is the call sign used for U.S. Marine Corps helicopters when the president is on board.
