Air New Zealand to Launch “Skynest” Sleep Pods for Long-Haul Comfort

Air New Zealand is set to introduce its highly anticipated “Skynest” sleep pods on May 18, 2026. This new feature, integrated into the airline’s Boeing 787-9 fleet, will allow Economy and Premium Economy passengers to enjoy full-flat sleeping arrangements for an additional fee.

The service will initially debut on the New York (JFK) to Auckland (AKL) route, which involves approximately 18 hours of flight time.

Technical Specifications and Design

Located between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins, the Skynest unit consists of six bunk-style beds. Each pod is approximately 2 meters long and comes equipped with the following features:

  • Dedicated ventilation system and USB charging ports
  • Reading light and privacy curtains
  • Fresh bedding replaced after every use
  • A specialized belt system designed for use while sleeping

Passengers utilizing this service will also receive a standard personal amenity kit during their flight.

Usage Terms and Pricing

According to details shared by the airline management, Skynest units will be available in scheduled sessions rather than for the full duration of the flight. The operational guidelines include:

  • Booking Limit: Each passenger can book only one four-hour session per flight.
  • Cost: A fee of 495 USD will be charged in addition to the existing flight ticket.
  • Age Requirement: The pods are designed for passengers aged 15 and older.
  • Access: Entering and exiting the lower, middle, and upper bunks requires physical movements such as bending, climbing, or kneeling.

Operational Timeline

The booking process for flights scheduled in November 2026 will begin on May 18, 2026. The airline stated that the four-hour session length was optimized based on sleep cycle tests conducted with over 200 passengers. Cabin crew will be allocated specific time between sessions for linen changes and hygiene preparations.
