Lufthansa Bids Farewell to Its Airbus A340-600 Fleet

Lufthansa is bidding farewell to its Airbus A340-600 aircraft. Flight LH419 from Washington Dulles to Frankfurt landed on the morning of October 19, 2026. Operated by aircraft registered D-AIHW, the flight marked Lufthansa’s final scheduled passenger service with the A340-600, bringing the aircraft type’s nearly 23 years of service with the airline to an end.
Lufthansa began introducing the Airbus A340-600 into its fleet in 2003 and operated a total of 24 aircraft of the type over the years.
The retirement of the A340-600 fleet is part of Lufthansa Group’s strategy to modernize its long-haul fleet and reduce operating costs. The airline plans to replace the A340-600s with newer-generation aircraft, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The retirement of Lufthansa’s A340-600 fleet does not mean the airline has phased out all Airbus A340 aircraft. The remaining A340-300s are also expected to be retired during 2027.
