Farewell to Aviation’s Iconic Boeing 757, the Hekla Aurora
The Boeing 757-200 registered TF-FIU, well known among aviation enthusiasts for Icelandair’s special Northern Lights livery, has been dismantled and scrapped at Lleida-Alguaire Airport in Spain. The teardown of the aircraft, known as “Hekla Aurora,” was completed by Servitec Aircraft Maintenance.
Built in 1994, the aircraft entered service with the Iberia fleet the same year and joined Icelandair in 2004. Hekla Aurora received its special livery depicting the Northern Lights in 2014. Along with the design, which was applied by hand over three weeks, special LED lighting reflecting the atmosphere of the aurora was installed in the cabin.
With roughly 32 years of flying history, the Boeing 757 operated thousands of flights between Iceland, Europe and North America. Hekla Aurora completed its final flight on 12 October 2025, a special farewell flight over Iceland with 140 passengers on board.
As Icelandair gradually retires the Boeing 757s that have been a key part of its fleet for many years, it is renewing that fleet with Airbus A321neo and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. With the dismantling of TF-FIU, one of the most striking special liveries in the memory of aviation enthusiasts has also bid farewell to the skies.
