A 35-year-old McDonnell Douglas MD-83 passenger aircraft was sold for approximately $102,000 at an auction held in Taiwan after remaining idle at Taipei Airport following Far Eastern Airlines’ declaration of bankruptcy in 2019. The aircraft, manufactured in 1992 and registered as B-28007, found a buyer on its third auction attempt for 3.2 million New Taiwan dollars.
After the airline ceased operations, public debts totaling around 96 million New Taiwan dollars—consisting of unpaid taxes, social security contributions, and airport fees—came into focus along with the aircraft. Due to these liabilities, the MD-83, which had been grounded for a long period, was seized by the government.
The aircraft had previously been offered for sale twice but failed to attract any buyers. Following a significant reduction in the starting price, the sale was completed at the third auction. While the identity of the buyer has not been officially disclosed, sources claim the aircraft was purchased by a company operating in the aviation and aerospace industry.
