12 Years After MH370: Renewed Deep-Sea Search Yields No Results

Twelve years after the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 with 239 people on board, a renewed deep-sea search in the southern Indian Ocean has failed to locate the missing aircraft. Malaysian officials stated on Sunday that despite the ongoing efforts and pressure from the families, the latest search phase has concluded without any findings.
Sea Floor Explored by Robotics
According to a statement from the Air Accident Investigation Bureau, a seabed search conducted by marine robotics company Ocean Infinity between March 2025 and January 2026 investigated thousands of square kilometers of the ocean floor. Despite the use of advanced technology, the search produced no confirmed evidence of the aircraft wreckage. Malaysia had agreed to a “no find, no fee” contract with the Texas-based company, which would only be paid 70 million dollars if the debris was discovered.
Operational Details and Safety Protocols
The Bureau reported that the search was carried out in two stages over 28 days, covering approximately 7,571 square kilometers (2,923 square miles) of the seafloor. It was noted that adverse weather conditions periodically disrupted operations, affecting the operational safety and efficiency of the mission. The official statement clarified that the activities performed did not yield any results confirming the location of the wreckage.
Families Demand Continued Action
The Boeing 777 disappeared from radar on March 8, 2014, shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing. Satellite data indicated that the plane diverted from its flight path and headed south toward the remote Indian Ocean.
Voice 370, a group representing the families of those on board, has urged the government to extend Ocean Infinity’s contract or consider similar arrangements with other deep-sea exploration firms. Although the current contract continues through June, the group noted that the search vessel has been redeployed for other tasks and is unlikely to return soon due to deteriorating sea conditions. The families stated they would continue their struggle for answers.
